This medicine was discovered in the year 1958 and introduced in the year 1972 for medical use. Amoxicillin is one of the essential medicines in the list of the World Health Organization (WHO). This medicine is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics especially in children and is available as a generic medication.  Amoxicillin was one of the seventeenth most commonly prescribed medicine in the United States with more than 31 million prescriptions in the year 2018. 

 It is an antibiotic that can be used in the treatment of bacterial infections including strep throat, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. The work of this medicine is to prevent the growth of bacterial This medicine is a penicillin-type antibiotic that can be used in the treatment of only bacterial infections. It is not used for viral infections including flu, and the common cold. 

Amoxicillin is also used with other medications that help in the treatment of stomach or intestinal ulcers which are caused by bacteria and also prevent the ulcers from returning. 

How to use this medicine

This medicine should be taken by mouth with or without food, usually every 8 to 12 hours as per consultation by your doctor. The dosage of this medicine is depending on your health conditions and response to treatment. When you use this medicine for any treatment, should drink a large amount of fluid or water as per directed by your doctor. 

You should take this medicine at the same time daily for the best effect and good treatment. If you stop taking Amoxicillin medicine too early then may increase the risk of bacteria continuing growing in your body that may result in a return of the infection. 

Side-effects

These are some of the common side-effects of this medicine are as given below – 

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

When you this medicine for a long period then it may result in a new vaginal yeast infection or a vaginal fungal infection. Allergic reaction is also one of the side-effects of this medicine is rare. If you feel any symptoms of allergic reactions such as swelling, rash, itching (especially of the tongue or face or throat), problem in breathing, severe dizziness then should contact with your doctor. 

Overdose

If you take the overdose of this medicine then it may increase the risk of problems in breathing. There are some of the symptoms of overdose of this medicine are as given below – 

  • Persistent Diarrhea
  • Seizures
  • Reduce the amount of urine
  • Vomiting

Precautions

If you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin then consults with your doctor before treatment. This medicine might have inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other problems. Before treatment with this medicine, you should tell your medical history to your doctor especially of kidney disease, which is a viral infection and other problems. This medicine is used in pregnancy and breastfeeding and does not appear to be harmful.
